PBRC Volunteers

On May 8, 2010 PBRC Volunteered for the Girls on the Run 5k.   Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. The purpose of the group is to teach the girls self-respect and healthy living through running. The girls meet for several weeks and have classes on various topics and train for a 5k race.

I was a running buddy for this race. A running buddy is an adult who is paired with a girl who has completed the program and encourages her along the race route. I was a little nervous leading up to this race because I was sure I would get a girl who ran a 6 minute mile and she would have to be my buddy during this race.

This turned out to be a great experience. My running buddy was a 3rd grader named Evelyn from Piney Grove Elementary school. She was truly a sweetheart; all smiles most of the course especially when there were water stops. Evelyn done an outstanding job during the course and was very happy to see the finish line and receive her Girls on the Run medal.

I recommend encouraging young girls to get involved with running simply because it can teach them sooo much about life. Girls on the Run is a great way to do so.
