The Pebble in Your Shoe

It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe.
Muhammad Ali

You are beautiful. You are strong. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are capable of climbing and mastering any mountain that you may be faced with in this life. This includes your fears, your self-imposed limitations, and your self-defeating attitudes. Do you truly believe that? Or are you allowing a pebble in your shoe to hold you back from defeating the mountains in your life?

A pebble is defined as a small stone worn smooth by erosion. In life, however, a pebble represents the excuses we use to keep us from accomplishing our goals and defeating our mountains. God has given us everything we need in order to make it through this life, but often times we are so focused on the pebbles that we waste energy that could have been used to tackle the mountain.

There are four types of people:

Those who run with pebbles in their shoes: These are the people who are striving to overcome their mountain, but continually make excuses so they will not have to give their all. They do the bare minimum and never push themselves to see how strong they truly are. They are content to simply make satisfactory progress up the mountain.

Those who add more pebbles: These are the people who continue to add excuse upon excuse until they eventually slide all the way back down the mountain. Any progress that has been made has been sabotaged by the excuses this person has used to limit themselves. They allowed their excuses to overcome them when all they had to do was keep climbing.

Those who throw pebbles: These are the people who have so many excuses of their own that they start piling them on other people when they see them making progress. They serve as distractions and negative factors that may affect someone else’s journey up the hill.

Those who overcome their pebbles: These are the people who may have been a part of the other groups at one time or another-but have made up their mind to overcome their excuses. They may have had to take off their shoes and dump their pebbles along the way, but now they are on an uphill climb and determined to push themselves until they make it to the top.

Ladies, you are so much stronger than you think you are. Don’t let something as small as a pebble stop you from climbing the mountain and giving it your all. The 5k is coming up and some of you may have already added some pebbles to your shoes that convince you that your are not capable of completing it. You ARE!! Dump the pebbles out! Don’t make your journey hard on yourself…Clear your mind, Know that you are Capable, and your body will do what you command it to do.

Good luck on your Pebble Free 5k!!!

*My name is Taylor Calamese. I am a rising senior at Winston-Salem State University, where I am studying Sport Management and Psychology. In the Fall of 2011 I plan on going to graduate school for Exercise Psychology. This year coming up, will make it a decade that I have been competing in Track & Field. I have been competing competitively in 5k’s for four years, as a result of being a part of the Cross Country Team. It has been a joy working with this club and meeting a group of ladies who are taking charge of their health.
